If you have more than one pet it may not be easy to find the culprit. There will be denial of course, but in the end it’s not so important.

I tell people that it is not a matter of if your pet will have an accident but rather when your pet will spot the carpet so it is important to know what to do if you would like to treat the problem yourself.

First let’s show you what not to do. Most homeowners apply some canned spot remover they purchased from the supermarket and then vigorously scrub the carpet with a towel or worse a stiff brush. This will only destroy the carpet and do nothing to clean the urine out of the fibers and the carpet pad.

The very first step if the urine is fresh is to get multiple layers of paper white towels and lay them on the carpet and step on them. This will absorb a lot of the liquid.

The second step is to pour a cup of warm water on top of the spot and remove the liquid immediately with a wet-dry shop vacuum. Repeat this twice. Next lay down some more paper towels on the spot and step on them to remove as much of the remaining liquid as possible.

Continue to use these paper towels until there is no more transfer of liquid from the carpet. By stepping on the towels you are applying a lot of weight which compresses the pad underneath thereby removing the trapped liquid.

By now you have probably removed about 80% to 90% of the urine without any scrubbing. The final step is to apply a 3% solution of hydrogen peroxide to the spot. This is generally available from any pharmacy for less than two dollars. The most effective way to apply hydrogen peroxide is to get an inexpensive sprayer for the bottle and mist the liquid on the spot.
